This concentration is informed by current labor market trends and the current demand to provide aviation science skills development for OWLS BAAS students, and students outside Texas State enrolled in pilot schools like Coast Flight located in San Marcos.
This program is a Hybrid Delivery Format (Asynchronous learning via Canvas for Aviation non-flight courses and Synchronous learning for Flight courses via In-person Ground Training at San Marcos Regional Airport).

Verification Process: After students have declared the Aviation Science concentration, they will get an Enrollment Packet from Coast Flight with instructions to upload documents for flight training via DocuSign. Verification documents includes 1st Class Medical Exam Certificate, Driver's license/government IDs, any additional requirements from FAA, and TSA checklist.
Additional fees, application terms, and restrictions will apply.
“…after noticing a fundamental gap in the number of quality training options available, Coast set out to launch an innovative new approach to flight training. The result was a cutting-edge, comprehensive form of flight training that unites professionalism, structure, and quality in military transition, pilot academy, and recreational training offerings". - Source: Coast Flight Website, About Coast, 2024.

Fequently Asked Questions
-
I have been accepted to the TXST B.A.A.S program. How do I now enroll in Aviation Science?
Please email aviation@txstate.edu to start the process.
-
When will I find out whether I have secured a spot with the flight school?
TXST will work with the flight school to finalize rosters and notify students as soon as possible. At the latest, the flight school rosters must be finalized a month prior to the beginning of the semester.
-
Can you send me information on how to schedule a tour with TXST and the flight school?
To schedule a tour at TXST, visit our Campus Tours page.
To schedule a tour at the flight school, visit the flight school appointment page.
-
Can flight training classes be completed in fewer than 7 long semesters (fall and spring)?
No. The 16 weeks within each semester are essential to covering all instruction and related materials for each flight training class. The sequencing of flight classes over the seven semesters is critical to ensuring the required knowledge and skills are acquired before beginning the next semester of more advanced flight instruction.
-
How many students are accepted into the program each year?
Twenty-five students are typically accepted into the program each year. Beginning for the 2025-2026 academic year (fall 2025), students will only be accepted for the fall semester (no spring entry into the aviation program).
-
Do I need to live on campus for the Aviation program?
New freshmen under the age of 20 (by September 1st for fall admission) with fewer than 30 semester credit hours are required to live in on-campus university housing. The only exception is if they qualify for an exemption outlined in the housing contract. All students who graduated from high school within the preceding 12 months of the semester of their admission are required to live on campus (regardless of the number of credits they may have accumulated prior to attending TXST).
-
Is this program R-ATP eligible?
The TXST Aviation program is not currently R-ATP eligible.
-
Is a Private Pilot’s Certificate required to start the program?
No. A Private Pilot’s Certificate is not required for this program. Students are not required to have any prior aviation background.
-
How much of the program will financial aid cover?
Eligible U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply for Federal Financial Aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The amount that financial aid will cover will vary.

The GI Bill® is not currently available due to the ongoing approval process. Therefore, requesting backpay at a later date is not an option.
-
Will the flight courses taken with another aviation program apply to the Aviation Science concentration at Texas State University?
Unfortunately, courses completed with another aviation program will not substitute for any of the required aviation courses. However, the flight courses could potentially be applicable toward the 32 hours of required Occupational Emphasis courses required for the Applied Arts and Sciences major.
